Welcome back!

Summer Reading sheets and points are due by Monday, August 23rd.  Students should turn their sheets in to their classroom teachers.  All AR tests must be taken by August 23rd to count for summer reading.

 Battle of the Books News

Congratulations to the Elementary Battle of the Books Team for winning the district level competition at Westchester Country Day School on March 2, 2010  and going on to win the Regional Competition on April 13, 2010 at Cannon School. 

BDS is the 2009-2010 Independent School's Elementary Battle of the Books State Champion.

Congratulations to the Middle School Battle of the Books Team for winning the district level competition at the Paramount Theater in Burlington on March 10, 2010. 
The team came in fourth at the Regional Competition on April 12, 2010 at Cannon School.

We are proud of both teams for their accomplishments!

 Book Fair News
Burlington Day School will have a book fair with Barnes and Noble on November 4, 2010!  Look for more news soon.  The book fair will be held at Barnes and Noble, but online ordering will also be available. 

Book Donations
If you would like to donate a book in honor of a teacher or your child please contact the library staff.  We are currently working on processing new books and making a list of other books that we would like to add to the collection.

During the school year, the Maude Sharpe Powell Library is open for student use Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. On Fridays, the library is open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Caldecott Award Winning Picture Books:  The award is given annually to the artist of the most distinguished picture book for children.  This year's winner is The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney

 Newbery Award Winning Books: The award is given annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.  This year's winner is When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.

Coretta Scott King Award Winning Books: The award (or awards) is given to an African American author and an African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution.

Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction: Scott O'Dell established this award in 1982.  This annual award goes to an author for a meritorous book published in the previous year for children or young adults.

American Library Association Great Sites:  A number of great websites for kids covering a variety of subjects.

KidSpace:  Websites at The Internet Public Library

4Kids.org is a team of educators, writers, technology specialists and students that produces weekly articles and links demonstrating how online learning can be a safe, fun and adventurous activity.
