Community Service
The school believes very strongly that community service at a young age helps to build concerned citizens as adults. Therefore, BDS students are engaged in numerous community service and service-learning projects throughout the year. Some of the projects in recent years include:
- Collecting used clothing, coats, shoes, books, and toys for children and families in need as a result of natural disasters such as the tsunami in Asia and Hurricane Katrina, or as a result of neglected circumstances.
- Making sandwiches once a week for Loaves & Fishes Ministry to distribute to after-school programs for children in low income areas.
- Raising money for various charitable organizations such as the American Red Cross, Loaves & Fishes, Family Shelter, Eldercare, Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, Diabetes organization, and CROP Walk.
- Writing letters each month to senior citizens living at Alamance Plaza.
- Cleaning school grounds.
- Participating in "Make a Difference" Day in Alamance County.
- Helping as volunteers for "Saturday Mornings for the Very Young" programs and at the "Raising Healthy Children" speaker series.
- Raising money for a Habitat for Humanity home.
- Developing a list of volunteer donors for a Red Cross blood drive.
- Conducting a toy drive for Positive Attitude Youth Center.
